Millions of Small Voices

It's October, and November is nearing. The U.S.A. and Canada's National Epilepsy Awareness months. What are YOU doing this November to show your support for Epilepsy? Yes, I asked YOU. The reader, at home, on the computer in their pajamas. What are you going to do to make a difference?

You may think that it doesn't matter if "just one person skips out" this year. You may think that there's TONS of other people spreading awareness, so you don't have to. But you're completely wrong! It is everyone's job, as bloggers, writers, photographers, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, grandfathers, friends, coworkers, or just people sitting at the computer in their pajamas - to use our VOICES this month!

That ONE person who chooses NOT to speak may be that ONE voice that NEEDED to be heard! It may be that ONE person who makes a HUGE connection with someone willing to donate over $1000 to Epilepsy fundraisers. It may be that ONE person who just found a great neurologist, who chose NOT to tell someone who was secretly in need of finding a good doctor. EVERY single voice counts!

There are an estimated 3 Million of us in the U.S.A. alone living with Epilepsy, and even more around the world. There are even some people who are not diagnosed yet. It is estimated that every 4 seconds a person is diagnosed with Epilepsy. Some of those people cannot speak... Maybe they are in the hospital, or maybe they have passed away. So let's speak for those who can't.

How do you speak? Well, that's a great question. You don't only have to use your mouth to "speak" and spread the word about Epilepsy. You can write an article for Epilepsy Awareness right here on Blogger. You can post about Epilepsy on Facebook. You can donate to a local Epilepsy charity, and tell your friends and family to donate too. You could even join a 5k for Epilepsy and show some REAL physical support! Maybe you can even get creative and think of your own way to share Epilepsy Awareness with people you know!

If you're at a loss, I've posted some easy ways below that you can use your "voice" and help spread Epilepsy Awareness:

- Sign the petition to turn Google.com purple for Epilepsy! This is a petition to turn the second "o" in Google into a purple ribbon for Epilepsy for the month of November. We need as many signatures possible, and we are shooting for 1,100 signatures. As of right now (10/19/2011) we have 665 signatures! More than halfway there!

- Donate to Team EpilepsyBlogger's fundraiser in this year's Seize the Moment Epilepsy 5k Run/Walk. You can donate $5, or you can donate $100. Whatever you can give is appreciated! Our goal is $500, so we have a ways to go!

- Post a link to the Epilepsy Foundation of America each day on your Facebook, Twitter, etc. Help spread the news and information on what Epilepsy is, and how others can help too!

- Make your own Epilepsy blog on Blogger.com! The best way to spread the word is... with words!

- Make your own purple ribbons and wear them each day to work, school, etc. for November! (Or whenever you want!) Give them to friends, family, coworkers, etc. to wear as well! All you have to do is buy some purple ribbon, shape it to look like this:

And glue a safety pin to the back so that it can be worn on a shirt! You could even get creative and write "Epilepsy" on your ribbon, or decorate it with other cool things! It's up to you!

It's up to you, but don't sit back. Your voice is important... just as important as mine, or any other person's voice. You may feel alone if others around you aren't as active about Epilepsy Awareness as you are. But remember, you can always connect with someone like me, or other Epilepsy Bloggers. And don't feel limited to JUST November. Every month is Epilepsy Awareness Month in my mind!
